Post-Fire Soil Restoration with 301 Organics
Wildfires leave behind scorched landscapes, depleted soil, and toxic residues. The soil biology, the life living below our feet, has been compromised. At 301 Organics, we can help with post-fire restoration of your soil and get you, your neighbors and your community back to eco- health in a more resilient and regenerative way! We take a whole systems and soil food web approach to revitalizing and restoring your soils back to life and good health.

Why Post-Fire Soil Restoration Matters
After a wildfire, beneficial soil microbes can be gravely impacted and fresh organic matter is lost. While the charred vegetation leaves ash, the charred structural debris leaves behind heavy metals, and chemical residues that pose risks to human health, plant life and water sources. Without intervention, burned soils can become hydrophobic, repelling water and increasing the risk of erosion, landslides, and poor vegetation recovery. Our strategy focuses first on containment of the organic material and second reintroducing the soil biology back into your soils to restore its fertility and accelerate ecological recovery.

How 301 Organics Can Help
Our post-fire soil restoration services utilize organic, sustainable, and science-backed techniques to revitalize fire-affected soils. It draws upon our expertise in composting, compost utilization and above all, the principles of the soil food web as taught by the world renowned soil microbiologist, Dr. Elaine Ingham.

In compost where the soil microbes thrive, certain bacteria produce enzymes capable of detoxifying heavy metals. These enzymes convert toxic metal ions into less harmful forms. https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/16/24/11124?form=MG0AV3
Similarly, beneficial fungi, also found in good quality compost, utilize their own enzymes and symbiotic relationship with plants to breakdown complex pollutants in soils, offering a versatile, cost-effective, and eco-friendly solution for environmental remediation. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00449-024-02978-6?form=MG0AV3

1. Compost Extract Application for Soil Restoration
Compost Extract is a liquid solution containing the soil microorganisms, like bacteria, fungi, protozoa and nematodes, responsible for organic and inorganic decomposition and nutrient cycling in plants.

2. Soil Microbe and Organic Matter Enrichment
We apply high-quality and biologically rich and diverse compost to reintroduce life back into fire charred landscapes. Other organic materials or biostimulants are also added to increase microbial populations that in turn improve soil aeration and structure. Other organic materials are also added to protect the microbial community that ultimately supports and optimizes plant regrowth. We source, as well as, craft our own compost blends with the soil food web in mind to restore microbial diversity and enhance soil fertility naturally.

3. Erosion Control and Soil Stabilization
Fire-damaged land is highly prone to erosion and runoff. We implement:
-
Mulching with organic materials to protect topsoil
-
Cover cropping, hydroseeding and transplanting of seedlings to establish root networks that hold soil in place
-
Natural erosion barriers to reduce water runoff and prevent sediment loss
-
Compost extract drenching of impacted areas

4. Heavy Metal and Toxin Remediation
The remains of structural debris left behind by fire contains heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and chemical contaminants in the soil. 301 Organics uses organic matter, bacteria, fungi, and other higher order microorganisms along with microbial inoculants to detoxify and help restore a healthy soil ecosystem.

5. Reforestation and Native Plant Reintroduction
Healthy soil is key to successful reforestation and ecosystem recovery. We work with regenerative landscape designers to reintroduce native plant species and improve soil conditions for natural regeneration. Our approach ensures long-term biodiversity and wildfire resilience.
